The Progress had a fine beginning, as reported in the Brigham Bugler in February, 1894: "It is one of the brightest and cleanest country papers in Utah, and its plump advertising columns show that the business men of Fillmore are wide awake and progressive." The success of the do-it-all publisher, J. P. Jacobsen, didn't last long, however. As reported in the Iron County Record in December, 1894, he "was recently fined $10, merely because he whipped his wife. He is said to have skipped the burg."
